Entropic gravity

Entropic gravity explains gravity as an emergent phenomenon of matter.

Explanation

According to this theory, gravity results from the difference in information density in space between two attracting masses and the space beyond. These are microscopic quantum mechanical effects. In three dimensions, this density decreases with the square of the distance.

It also provides an alternative theoretical basis for an explanation of dark matter.

History

Dutch physicist Erik Verlinde proposed entropic gravity in 2009.
