Radix point

A radix point is used in numerical representations to separate the integer part of a number from the fractional part.

Explanation

In the decimal system the radix point is called the decimal separator. In most countries the separator is written as a point (.) or as a comma (,). On calculators the  •  key is generally used.

In science, the point is used as separator.

History

The German astronomer Bartholomaeus Pitiscus (1561 - 1613) is seen as the inventor of the decimal point.
