Riemann sphere

The Riemann sphere is a model of all complex numbers, including infinity.

Explanation

The complex plane is a geometric representation of complex numbers, and consists of a real x-axis and orthogonaly the imaginary y-axis. By adding a point at infinity you create a sphere.

The Riemann sphere can be visualized as the extended complex plane wrapped around a ball.

History

This sphere is named after the famous German mathematician Bernhard Riemann (1826 - 1866).
