Simplifying fractions

Calculations with fractions are not always easy.

Explanation

We start with

First we just make the denominators equal

and write this as one fraction

Now we calculate the numerator

and eliminate the parenthesis in the numerator

We can put something outside parentheses

You can now divide the numerator and denominator by x – 2

Don't call that scratch-out, because you really perform a division, and there remains 1. Moreover, dividing by zero is not allowed, so you must add that this solution only holds for ≠ 2.
