There are several symbols that are used as division sign.

Explanation

On a calculator you usually have a ÷ key. Also the colon : and the oblique slash / are sometimes used. You can also write a division as a fraction with a horizontal fraction bar.

Example 1

1 ÷ 2 = 0,5 , 1 / 2 = 0,5 , 1 : 2 = 0,5

History

The fraction bar was introduced in 1228 by Leonardo of Pisa in his book Liber Abaci.
