Dissipative system

A dissipative structure is an open system that exchanges energy and matter with its environment.

Explanation

The foundations of dissipative structures impose an irreversible role for time. Because of this, quantum mechanics is not able to describe these systems.

History

Russian-Belgian physicist Ilya Prigogine (1917 - 2003) worked on dissipative structures.
