Fermi energy
The Fermi energy EF is the energy of the highest filled energy level in the ground state of the free electron Fermi gas.
Explanation
For non-interacting identical spin-½ fermions in a three-dimensional (non-relativistic) system the Fermi energy is given by
where
ℏ Reduced Planck constant m0 Restmass N Number of particles V Volume of the system
The Fermi energy is only defined at absolute zero.
HistoryThe name Fermi energy is a tribute to the Italian physicist Enrico Fermi (1901 - 1954). |
