Gluon

A gluon is the carrier of the strong nuclear interaction.

Explanation

Gluons are never observed as free elementary particles, since they are confined within hadrons. They are gauge bosons. In composite particles, the quarks are held together by gluons.

History

In 1972, Harald Fritzsch and Murray Gell-Mann drew up a gauge theory for the strong interaction, called quantum chromodynamics.
