Nuclear fusion

In physics, nuclear fusion is the process by which several atomic nuclei of equal charge unite to form a heavier nucleus.

Explanation

At the same time, an enormous amount of energy is released or absorbed, which can cause matter to enter a plasma state.

In test facilities, such as the Joint European Torus (JET) near Oxford, this is being examined. The aim is to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of nuclear fusion as an energy source on earth. A tokamak facility has been built for this purpose.

History

The British astronomer Arthur Eddington described nuclear fusion of hydrogen in the sun in 1920.
